Characterization of monkey enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and human typical and atypical EPEC serotype isolates from neotropical nonhuman primates.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) has been associated with infantile diarrhea and mortality in humans in developing countries. While diarrhea is also a major problem among primates kept in captivity, the role of E. coli is unclear. This study was designed to characterize diarrheagenic E. coli recovered from the feces of 56 New World nonhuman primates, primarily marmosets (Callithrix spp....

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization of Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains in Tehran, Iran

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains can be detected by serogrouping and the presence of enterocyte attaching- effacing (eae) gene. Most EPEC strains belong to a certain O antigenic group. Locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) Pathogenicity Island contains the eae gene and secretory proteins (ESPs) that introduce the attaching-effacing lesion. LEE inserted i...

Virulence genes and molecular typing of different groups of Escherichia coli O157 strains in cattle.

Characterization of an Escherichia coli O157 strain collection (n = 42) derived from healthy Hungarian cattle revealed the existence of diverse pathotypes. Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC; eae positive) appeared to be the most frequent pathotype (n = 22 strains), 11 O157 strains were typical enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC; stx and eae positive), and 9 O157 strains were atypical, with none of th...

Oligonucleotide probe for detection of the enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) adherence factor of localized adherent EPEC.

The enteropathogenic Escherichia coli adherence factor (EAF) probe detects isolates of enteropathogenic E. coli that exhibit localized adherence to HEp-2 cells. A 21-base oligonucleotide probe was constructed on the basis of a sequence from within the 1-kb EAF probe and was shown to have greater sensitivity and specificity than the EAF fragment probe in detecting localized adherent E. coli.

Escherichia coli strains of serotype O51:H40 comprise typical and atypical enteropathogenic E. coli strains and are potentially diarrheagenic.

Escherichia coli strains of serotype O51:H40 were studied with regard to the presence of several virulence properties and their genetic diversity and enteropathogenicity in rabbit ileal loops. This serotype encompasses potential enteropathogenic strains mostly classified as being atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains, which are genetically closer to enterohemorrhagic E. coli than to ...
